Confucian discussions on human dignity provide not only a way to justify the equality of human moral status, but also a way to justify the moral obligation of protecting and developing human nature, thereby constituting a reliable theoretical basis for coping with ethical issues caused by biomedical technologies today.

To determine in a sample of older community-dwelling adults (1) the proportion who have engaged in medical and financial planning; (2) the factors associated with advance care directive (ACD) completion and substitute decision maker (SDM) appointment; and (3) for those without an ACD, what might prompt completion.

A cross-sectional survey was undertaken with individuals receiving community aged care services in metropolitan and regional communities. Data collection was conducted by case managers during a home visit.

Overall, 158 individuals (M=78years, SD=8.7) participated (53.5% consent rate). Financial planning participation (will=85%; enduring power of attorney=66%) was higher than medical planning participation (SDM 54%; ACD 30%). Present study was aimed to determine ESBL-encoding genes distribution in Diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) isolated from animal-source food products and human clinical samples in Mashhad, Iran. The strains were also further studied to analyse genotypic diversity and find genetic relationships between them.

The number of 85 DEC strains including 52 and 33 strains isolated from 300 food and 520 human stool samples, respectively. Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), and repetitive extragenic palindromic-PCR (rep-PCR) typing methods were used to track their genetic relationships. TTP during pregnancy is rare, with estimated prevalence of 1/200 000, and even rarer in association with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, with only two cases reported. Differential diagnosis includes HELLP syndrome (hemolysis elevated liver enzymes and low platelets), sepsis, intravascular-disseminated coagulation, and acquired autoimmune diseases, each one with its unique treatment and prognosis. A case of a pregnant woman at 26th week with sudden onset of left hand paresthesia and purpura is reported. PLASMIC score showed high risk for ADAMTS-13 deficiency and diagnosis of TTP was made.
